Barrett’s Esophagus is associated with long-term gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) and is a risk factor for esophageal cancer. Current practice is to screen select patients who have multiple risk factors for esophageal cancer and monitor those patients diagnosed with Barrett’s Esophagus for development of precancerous change (dysplasia).

The Multidisciplinary Approaches to Early Barrett’s Cancer virtual presentation was held on November 18, 2020. Proton pump inhibitors do not increase the risk of dementia: a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective studies

Published studies have reported variable results on the association between duration of proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use and the risk of dementia. An extensive literature search was performed in PubMed, Embase, Google Scholar, and Cochrane for studies examining the risk of cognitive decline and dementia among PPI users versus non-PPI users in prospective studies. Retrospective database linkage studies, case reports, case series, editorials, uncontrolled cohort studies, cross-sectional studies, and review articles were excluded. Gastric ischemic preconditioning may reduce the incidence and severity of anastomotic leakage after οesophagectomy: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Anastomotic leakage after esophagectomy is a severe and life-threatening complication. Gastric ischemic preconditioning is a strategy for the improvement of anastomotic healing. Aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to investigate the impact of gastric ischemic preconditioning on postoperative morbidity. A systematic literature search was performed to identify studies comparing patients undergoing gastric ischemic preconditioning before esophagectomy with nonpreconditioned patients. The vision of the International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus (ISDE) is to be a leader in the development and dissemination of information about the esophagus. It achieves this through its official journal Diseases of the Esophagus covering all aspects of the esophagus – etiology, investigation and diagnosis, the World Congress, maintaining a network of specialist around the world through membership, virtual presentations on key topics such as esophageal cancer, barrett’s esophagus, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), achalasia, eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), and more.

Professor Prateek Sharma, Gastroenterologist at the University of Kansas School of Medicine and VA Medical Center, served as President of the International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus (ISDE) from 2018-2020. A leader in the field of upper gastrointestinal diseases including Barrett’s esophagus, esophageal cancer, and gastroesophageal reflux disease, Professor Sharma brought a wealth of experience and insight to this key leadership role. In this video Professor Sharma reflects on his term as President of ISDE including some of the society’s achievements.
