Call for Expressions of Interest:
DOTE Editorial Fellowship Programme

Diseases of the Esophagus Journal (DOTE), the official journal of the International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus (ISDE), is launching the DOTE Editorial Fellowship Programme, an early-career initiative designed to cultivate the next generation of academic leaders in esophageal diseases. These positions will provide exceptional early-career clinicians and researchers with structured opportunities to contribute to the journal’s editorial work, enhance their scholarly skills, and build leadership experience within an international community.

Role Purpose

The DOTE Editorial Fellowship Representatives will serve as active contributors to the journal’s editorial processes, engagement activities, and capacity-building initiatives. Representatives will work closely with senior Associate Editors through a formal mentorship pathway and will gain hands-on experience in peer review, decision-making, and editorial policy. This role is intended to support professional development while strengthening the journal’s reviewer pipeline, early-career engagement, and global footprint.

About the Initiative

The DOTE Editorial Fellowship is an early-career development program designed to strengthen the sustainability of the journal and support the growth of the global esophageal disease community. By integrating early-career professionals into editorial, mentorship, and engagement structures, the program aims to cultivate the next generation of reviewers, editors, and academic leaders.

Key Responsibilities

Editorial Engagement and Mentorship

  • Participate in a structured mentorship program with a designated DOTE Associate Editor.
  • Conduct supervised manuscript reviews, receiving targeted feedback to develop high-quality reviewing skills.
  • Contribute to editorial discussions, decision-making processes, and journal improvements where appropriate.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, confidentiality, and adherence to editorial ethics.

Reviewer Development and Skills Training

  • Engage in peer review training workshops offered through ISDE, ESDE, CSDE, or other partner societies.
  • Develop competencies in academic writing, critical appraisal, and best practices in scholarly publishing.
  • Help build a reliable pool of early-career reviewers for the journal.

Authorship and Content Development

  • Contribute to new and emerging DOTE content streams, including the “Lessons Learned” section (e.g. technical reflections, early-career insights, and professional development perspectives).
  • Write or co-author perspectives, commentaries, or invited pieces linked to high-impact DOTE articles, when requested.

Engagement and Outreach

  • Collaborate with DOTE’s social media and communications team to support journal visibility and highlight early-career contributions.
  • Assist in promoting DOTE initiatives through Young ISDE and regional early-career networks (ESDE, CSDE, and others).
  • Serve as representatives of the DOTE Editorial Fellowship Programme at ISDE meetings, workshops, and relevant events.

Community and Network Building

  • Strengthen ties between DOTE and early-career groups worldwide.
  • Support cross-regional engagement and contribute ideas to broaden the journal’s reach and relevance for early-career professionals.

Term of Appointment

  • Two-year term, beginning upon formal appointment.
  • Time commitment: approximately 2–4 hours per month, with periodic peaks aligned to reviewing, training, or editorial activities.
  • Outstanding representatives may be considered for future progression to Associate Editor or related leadership roles.

Application Requirements

Applicants should submit:

  1. Curriculum vitae (maximum 3–4 pages).
  2. Personal statement (maximum 500 words) addressing:
    • Motivation for applying.
    • Relevant experience in clinical care, research, or academic writing.
    • Interest in editorial work and long-term professional goals.
  3. Evidence of engagement in esophageal-disease-related scholarship (e.g., publications, conference abstracts, quality improvement work, teaching activities).
  4. A letter of support (optional but encouraged) from a supervisor, mentor, or department head.
