As an international society the ISDE has strived for diversity through its leadership, membership, education and research initiatives by becoming more multidisciplinary in its makeup. We recognize that being more diverse can mean more than this and can also change from time-to-time. With that in mind we felt it was time to put this commitment into words, tell you how we will work towards being more diverse and how you can help.

The Board of Directors for the International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus (ISDE) is pleased to introduce the ISDE Position Statement on Diversity and Inclusion. We recognize the strength in diversity and promote a culture of equity, where all individuals are given access to the same opportunities. We will welcome and encourage diversity throughout the ISDE membership, educational events, committees, and community engagements, both individually and collectively among members.

How can you help?

• Recommend diverse committee members, speakers or experts to committee chairs and/or ISDE leaders
• Forward our calls for volunteers, proposals, and/or awards to relevant affinity groups with the message that we are looking for diverse candidates
• Circulate our calls for abstracts, papers and other submissions widely amongst colleagues including those from marginalized groups, and encourage students from underrepresented groups to participate
• Speak up when you see marginalization and intimidation, and offer feedback on ISDE’s ongoing strategies for creating an environment that values and respects diversity
• Share your ideas and best practices for how we can realize our vision

The vision of the International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus (ISDE) is to be a leader in the development and dissemination of information about the esophagus. It achieves this through its official journal Diseases of the Esophagus covering all aspects of the esophagus – etiology, investigation and diagnosis, the World Congress, maintaining a network of specialist around the world through membership, virtual presentations on key topics such as esophageal cancer, barrett’s esophagus, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), achalasia, eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), and more.

Professor Prateek Sharma, Gastroenterologist at the University of Kansas School of Medicine and VA Medical Center, served as President of the International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus (ISDE) from 2018-2020. A leader in the field of upper gastrointestinal diseases including Barrett’s esophagus, esophageal cancer, and gastroesophageal reflux disease, Professor Sharma brought a wealth of experience and insight to this key leadership role. In this video Professor Sharma reflects on his term as President of ISDE including some of the society’s achievements.

Persistent indefinite for dysplasia in Barrett’s esophagus is a risk factor for dysplastic progression to low-grade dysplasia

Patients with Barrett’s esophagus (BE) are at increased risk of esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC). The risk is largely based on the degree of dysplasia. Dysplasia cannot always be differentiated from inflammatory changes, and therefore may be classified as indefinite for dysplasia (IND). The risk of progressive dysplasia in patients with IND is unclear. The COVID-19 pandemic continues to have a significant impact on the provision of medical care. Planning to ensure there is capability to treat those that become ill with the virus has led to an almost complete moratorium on elective work. This study evaluates the impact of COVID-19 on cancer, in particular surgical intervention, in patients with esophago-gastric cancer at a high-volume tertiary center. Dr. Kitagawa served as the 14th ISDE President: During Presidency he helped the society become the premier multidisciplinary international organization focused on esophageal diseases. At that time, its biennial congress aimed to gather all specialties involved in the clinical management and research of patients with esophageal diseases.

The Advice for Early Career Physician video series was recorded during the 15th ISDE World Congress to provide advice and support to early career physicians. Over the next few months each video will be featured here.

In this video Dr. Peter Siersema reflects on key decision-making points he encountered in his career and what advice he would give to young physicians.

Esophageal cancer is among the 6th to 8th cause of cancer mortality according to the Global Cancer Observatory. The esophagus is a muscular tube that connects the throat to the stomach. Its symptoms cause a significant impact on patients lives and are often: swallow disorder (dysphagia), unintentional weight loss, heartburn and chest pain. The early treatment for esophageal cancer is imperative for a better prognosis and enhances the chance of the patient survivor. Esophagectomy has an important role in the cancer treatment and minimally invasive approach has been achieving an increasingly solid result in recent years.

The ISDE (International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus) hosted a virtual presentation and discussion regarding cancer of the esophagus, managing the disease including surgery for esophageal cancer and other treatment approaches.

The Esophageal Cancer Virtual Tumour Board held on August 20, 2020, and moderated by Mark van Berge Henegouwen, Amsterdam University Medical Center (Netherlands) and Lorenzo Ferri, McGill University (Canada), is presented in four separate segments below. Watch different segments when you have the time or all at once, the choice is yours.

International, Interdisciplinary, Everything esophageal!

The Communications Committee created a new Facebook group, Challenging Cases Discussions, to provide a platform for discussing cases and clinical challenges on diseases of the esophagus. Members are encouraged to use this platform for advice and opinions on a clinical conundrum of interest.

With a distinctive multidisciplinary international composition of leaders in different areas of expertise, the purpose of this new discussion group is to spread knowledge and improve patient care through collaborative engagements.

The ISDE Board of Directors is inviting all members to join them in contributing to the growth of the society by joining a Standing Committee.

Join a dedicated group of physicians, surgeons, scientists, and other health professionals work towards making ISDE an international leader in the development and dissemination of information about the esophagus.
