The ISDE community gathered in the historic city of Kyoto, Japan, from September 16 to 18, 2026, for three days of scientific exchange, collaboration and connection.
More than 800 attendees from over 50 countries took part in this year’s World Congress, with the rich cultural heritage of Japan’s former imperial capital providing a memorable backdrop to the scientific program.
ISDE is a vibrant multidisciplinary community of physicians, allied health personnel and scientists united by a shared interest in benign and malignant conditions affecting the esophagus. That international and multidisciplinary spirit was on full display in Kyoto.
More than 500 abstracts were submitted from over 30 countries, with more than 300 abstract presenters and over 100 invited faculty contributing their expertise and perspectives throughout the program.
Alongside the scientific sessions, the Congress provided an important opportunity for members to reconnect with longtime colleagues and establish new connections with peers from around the world. The Welcome Reception opened the meeting with a Japanese dance performance, setting the tone for a Congress that combined scientific exchange with the opportunity to experience the culture of Kyoto.
Interactive learning was a key focus throughout the program, with multiple tumor boards, audience engagement tools, audience Q&A, moderated poster walks, networking events and more encouraging active participation and exchange between faculty and delegates.

Building on the success of recent meetings in Kyoto and Brisbane, Australia, the 2027 Congress will once again welcome attendees from across the globe and bring together varied perspectives on benign and malignant diseases of the esophagus.
We look forward to welcoming the ISDE community to Utrecht in 2027.
