We are pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications to host the 2023 World Congress for Esophageal Diseases from any convention bureau within the European region.

The ISDE is an international, multispecialty society founded in 1979 for the study of the esophagus in disease and in health. The goal of the congress is to promote the exchange of scientific and medical knowledge among specialists in the field, to maintain interchange with organizations and industries, and to encourage basic and clinical research in fields related to the esophagus.

The last European congress was held during September 2018 in Vienna, Austria, exceeding all previous records for abstracts and attendance, and we look forward to returning to the region in 2023.

Any convention bureau within the European region is invited to submit a letter of intent to host. ISDE member support is not required for the Letter of Intent stage.

We are pleased to announce that leaders of the European Society for Diseases of the Esophagus will be participating in the review and selection process, representing the views of our European members. The final selection will be approved by the ISDE Executive Committee.

Letters of intent are due by April 16, 2020.

Dr. Enrique Moreno-Gonzalez, the 5th President of the ISDE, is well-known for his wide experience in general and digestive surgery with particular expertise in complex upper gastrointestinal procedures. He was one of the pioneers of esophageal surgery in Spain and one of the first leaders of liver and multivisceral transplantation in the 1980's.

For a long time he served in various ISDE committees as well as in the Editorial Board of Diseases of the Esophagus and was president of the ISDE from 1995-1998. During his presidency, he introduced a number of new initiatives and hosted the 9th ISDE World Congress in Madrid in 2004.

Thank you to Prof. Theodore Liakakos, ESDE 2019 congress president, and the ESDE board for submitting this meeting review.

The ESDE 2019 congress was sucessfully held in Athens November 20-22, 2019.

Two pre-congress courses on minimally invasive esophagectomy and on endoscopy as well as the opening ceremony featuring the welcome addresses from Prof. Magnus Nilsson and Prof. Theodore Liakakos were held on the first day.

Updates on many “hot topics” were given by some of the most well-known international esophagologists.   Prof. John Reynolds, recently elected as ESDE General Secretary, gave the first “Christophe Mariette” lecture on “Multimodality Treatment in Esophageal Cancer”.

The congress official dinner was a unique experience at the Acropolis Museum.

Roundtable 4. Episode 3.

Barrett’s Esophagus is associated with long-term gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) and is a risk factor for esophageal cancer. Current practice is to screen select patients who have multiple risk factors for esophageal cancer and monitor those patients diagnosed with Barrett's esophagus for development of precancerous change (dysplasia). Patients who are at higher risk of progressing to esophageal cancer may benefit from endoscopic therapy. 

An expert roundtable discussion on the management of Barrett’s Esophagus was recorded in three episodes during the 16th World Congress for Esophageal Diseases in Vienna, Austria. In Episode 3 our panelists discuss who should be treated, tools and skills required in endoscopic therapy, alternative therapies, the role of RFA, challenges, techniques and practices, other modalities and surveillance after treatment.
