Thank you to Prof. Theodore Liakakos, ESDE 2019 congress president, and the ESDE board for submitting this meeting review.

The ESDE 2019 congress was sucessfully held in Athens November 20-22, 2019.

Two pre-congress courses on minimally invasive esophagectomy and on endoscopy as well as the opening ceremony featuring the welcome addresses from Prof. Magnus Nilsson and Prof. Theodore Liakakos were held on the first day.

Updates on many “hot topics” were given by some of the most well-known international esophagologists.   Prof. John Reynolds, recently elected as ESDE General Secretary, gave the first “Christophe Mariette” lecture on “Multimodality Treatment in Esophageal Cancer”.

The congress official dinner was a unique experience at the Acropolis Museum.

A joint session with the IGCA brought together different experiences to achieve our common tasks on adenocarcinoma of upper GI tract.

Updates of multicentric studies and a young investigator meeting together with the activity of the educational committee were also part of the program.

Abstracts from this meeting were published in Volume 32, Issue Supplement_2 in the Journal for Diseases of the Esophagus.*

We had the opportunity to receive an update on the society journal DOTE from the editor, Giovanni Zaninotto, who presented the latest news from our journal.

An invitation to the next meeting to be held in Milan, Italy, November 19-21, 2020 has been extended. In addition, the settings of future events (Leuven 2021 and Cologne 2022) have also been decided.

During the general assembly the new board has been elected: Magnus Nilsson became Past President, Riccardo Rosati President, John Reynolds General Secretary, Philippe Nafteux Treasurer, Peter Siersema and Edoardo Savarino as Councilors, and Richard Van Hillegesberg has been confirmed as chair of the educational committee.   Among the youngest, Jessie Elliott is chairman of the trainee chapter and Lucas Goense vice-chairman.
