Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is on the rise worldwide, and its diagnosis and long-term management remain a challenge across specialties. Join the International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus (ISDE) for the first installment of Demystifying Eosinophilic Esophagitis, a three-part webinar series exploring the epidemiology, diagnosis, and clinical consequences of EoE. This opening session is presented by two internationally recognized experts in the field.

Gary Falk, MD MS, Emeritus Professor of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Perelman School of Medicine, USA

Dr. Gary Falk is Professor Emeritus of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, where he previously served as Co-Director of the Joint Penn–CHOP Center for Digestive, Liver and Pancreatic Disorders and Director of the Esophagology and Swallowing Center. His work has focused on esophageal diseases, and he is widely published in leading journals including Gastroenterology, Lancet Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and Diseases of the Esophagus, where he serves as Associate Editor.

He is a Master of the American College of Gastroenterology and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American Gastroenterological Association, and the College of Physicians of Philadelphia.

Nirmala Gonsalves, MD AGAF FACG, Professor of Medicine, Northwestern University - The Feinberg School of Medicine, USA

Dr. Nirmala Gonsalves is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology and Northwestern University – The Feinberg School of Medicine. She completed her undergraduate training at the University of Notre Dame, graduate studies at the Harvard University Extension School and medical degree at UMDNJ- Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. She then completed her internal medicine residency and gastroenterology fellowship training at Northwestern Memorial Hospital where she joined the faculty in 2005. At Northwestern she serves as the Director of the Northwestern Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disorders Program and has authored numerous consensus guidelines, original research publications and presented extensively at international society meetings, invited grand rounds, and symposia focusing on eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases (EGIDs).

She continues to serve as a steering committee member of The International Gastrointestinal Eosinophil Researchers (TIGERS) and serves as a site PI for the NIH funded U54 Grant Consortium of Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disease Researchers (CEGIR, PI-Rothenberg) with the mission to develop greater understanding of the pathophysiology of these disorders and improve the lives of our patients. Locally, she also serves as the GI Division Director of Faculty Development and Wellness, Director of Clinical Trials Operations and is a peer coach for the department of medicine. She has also been elected to serve on AGA council as the Vice-Chair for the Esophagus, Gastric and Duodenal section of the American Gastroenterological Association.

Japan Digestive Disease Week (JDDW) (05 Nov 2026)

JDDW 2026 will host the 68th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Gastroenterology, the 112th Congress of the Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society, the 30th General Meeting of the Japan Society of Hepatology, the 24th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Gastroenterological Surgery, and the 64th General Meeting of the Japanese Society of Gastrointestinal Cancer Screening. The first JDDW was held in 1993 and has become one of the largest scientific meetings in Japan, with 24,300 participants in 2024. By bringing together physicians, researchers, and medical staff from various specialties in the field of gastroenterology, JDDW has been disseminating the latest knowledge and medical technologies across a wide range of fields, not only within specialized areas but also across other disciplines.

The ISDE Board of Directors is thrilled to announce that Utrecht, The Netherlands, has been selected as the host city for the 2027 ISDE World Congress. This prestigious event will take place from September 21-23, 2027, bringing together global leaders, innovators, and practitioners in the field of esophageal diseases.

Nestled in the heart of the Netherlands, Utrecht is a city that blends rich history with modern innovation. Known for its iconic canals, vibrant cultural scene, and welcoming atmosphere, Utrecht is a hub of knowledge and collaboration. The city is home to one of Europe’s leading universities, a thriving life sciences industry, and an extensive network of historic and modern venues, making it the perfect backdrop for an international congress.
