Achalasia

Achalasia is a relatively rare esophageal motility disorder that is mainly characterized by a lack of peristalsis of the esophageal body and absence or incomplete relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter. As a result, patients typically present dysphagia, regurgitation and occasionally chest pain, pulmonary complications and malnutrition.

The ISDE Guidelines Committee proposed and endorsed the Esophageal Achalasia Guidelines (I-GOAL) in 2018 to offer clinicians and patients with an up-to-date framework for making informed decisions on managing the disease.

Achalasia Roundtable Discussion
