The 20th ISDE Executive Committee Meeting was held on 21 October, 2000 at the Chicago Sheraton Hotel and Towers, Chicago, USA under the chairmanship of Dr T DeMeester.
1. Membership Committee
The present membership is 758 (highest ever). There were 78 new members in 2000(second highest for a non-congress year). The term `honorary member' should be changed to `distinguished member', since the term honorary member implies somebody who has been made so because of meritorious contributions to the society. Senior members should be awarded their status automatically upon retirement without requiring a request. At the present meeting, seven candidates for Senior Membership were presented by the Secretary General.
2. Scholarship Committee
Two individuals from seven applicants were selected to be granted scholarships in 2000. The necessity for fund raising inside and outside of Japan was discussed.
3. Journal Committee
The journal, Diseases of the Esophagus, is now listed in all major search systems such as Medline, Index Medicus, etc. The impact factor will be calculated and will be available in 2001. The journal has an online version. The scientific situation of the journal is now stable and acceptable. Dr DeMeester pointed out that the journal is one of the most valuable assets of the society and praised Dr Siewert, the Editor-in-Chief, for the job he has done. Discussions was held concerning the lengthy process involved in publishing the journal.
4. Financial Report
A discussion was held on the possibility of a partnership or affiliate relationship with a `big-brother' society and holding a joint conference, and it was decided to continue the discussion at a later time. The Secretary General proposed to increase the dues from $100 to $150, and to add a statement with a request for donations. It was decided to recommend to the Council and General Assembly in Sao Paulo that the dues be raised to $150.
5. New Proposal
Dr Siewert proposed that the already in-place system of Federation Chairman should be strengthened so that Federation Chairmen would all have a counterpart who is an internist . A motion to that effect was made and accepted. The next Executive committee Meeting will be in Atlanta in May at the time of the DDW. Dr DeMeester said that a dinner will be held at the DDW in Atlanta to which all officers will be invited and all Federation Chairmen will be strongly encouraged to bring one internist.
6. Nomination of International Officers and Personnel
The Secretary General presented information on the need for several changes of offices, in particular the need for a new Vice-President to succeed Dr Lerut. It was decided not to discuss these points at present and changes of offices will be discussed between now and the meeting in Sao Paulo.
