Section 1
Establishment
The Society was founded in 1979 by Professor Komei Nakayama in Tokyo
in Order to contribute widely to the field of Diseases of the Esophagus
internationally, drawing upon the expertise that had been built up
in this field both in Japan and in other countries.
Section 2
Purpose
1) To Provide a forum for the exchange of knowledge experience and
techniques concerning the treatment of esophageal diseases.
2) To disseminate the results of the progress made in the field of
esophageal diseases and to accumulate data on a worldwide basis.
3) To increase the exchange of researchers in the field of esophageal
diseases.
Section 3
Academic Meetings
The international congresses are held at 3-year intervals in different
countries. The ISDE was founded in November 1979, by Professor Komei
Nakayama.

There have also been several academic meetings held in various countries
where there are several members of the ISDE. The Japan chapter of
the ISDE has held various meetings over the years and in 1985, Dr.
Nakayama proposed Professor Morio Kasai as chairman of the Japan chapter.

As of the 1st of January of 1995, this was taken over by the Japan
Esophageal Diseases Research Association and its activities cased.

The ISDE is a supporting organization of the occasion of ICS Congresses
