History

Section 1
Establishment
The Society was founded in 1979 by Professor Komei Nakayama in Tokyo in Order to contribute widely to the field of Diseases of the Esophagus internationally, drawing upon the expertise that had been built up in this field both in Japan and in other countries.

Section 2
Purpose
1) To Provide a forum for the exchange of knowledge experience and techniques concerning the treatment of esophageal diseases.
2) To disseminate the results of the progress made in the field of esophageal diseases and to accumulate data on a worldwide basis.
3) To increase the exchange of researchers in the field of esophageal diseases.

Section 3
Academic Meetings
The international congresses are held at 3-year intervals in different countries. The ISDE was founded in November 1979, by Professor Komei Nakayama.

1st International Meeting: 10th-11th of November, 1980, Tokyo. President: Prof. Komei Nakayama

2nd International Meeting: October 3rd-6th, 1983

3rd International Meeting: 14th-18th of September, 1986, President Prof. J. Rudiger Siewert, Munich

There have also been several academic meetings held in various countries where there are several members of the ISDE. The Japan chapter of the ISDE has held various meetings over the years and in 1985, Dr. Nakayama proposed Professor Morio Kasai as chairman of the Japan chapter. Japan chapter meetings were held in as follows:

2nd Meeting: June 19th, 1986, Kyoto Professor Ishigami of Yamaguchi University

3rd Meeting: June 16th, 1987, Osaka, Prof. Nabeya, Kyorin University

4th Meeting: July 17th, 1988, Tokyo, Dr. Akiyama Hiroshi, Toranomon Hospital

5th Meeting: May 19th, 1989, Toyama, Professor Fujimaki of Toyama Medical and Pharmaceutical University

6th Meeting: July 7th, 1990, Kurume, Prof. Kakegawa of Kurume University

7th Meeting: September 20th, 1991, Tokyo, Dr. Iitsuka of Ohji National Hospital

8th Meeting: November 28th, 1992, Sendai, Prof. Mori of Tohoku University

9th Meeting: November 26th, 1993, Tokyo, Prof. Endo of Tokyo Medical and Dental University

As of the 1st of January of 1995, this was taken over by the Japan Esophageal Diseases Research Association and its activities cased.
